Jake is an active private instructor of clarinet currently based in the Twin Cities, MN. While earning his Master’s of Music at Florida State University he served as a teaching assistant; his duties included teaching lessons to undergraduate music majors, coaching chamber music, and teaching the clarinet methods course to music education majors. He has taught students ranging from middle school to adult, beginner to advanced, and has had students successfully audition into the FSU music program and win positions in the Florida All-District and All-State Band’s. He has taught at the MacPhail Center for Music, the Music for the Sake of Music camp, and has given clinics to middle school and high school bands and clarinet sections.
Lessons with Jake involve the study of clarinet fundamentals, etudes, solo repertoire, and the interpretation and execution of musical expression. He crafts lesson assignments and requirements based on the needs and abilities of each student. He tries to spend equal proportions of his lessons on each of these components or will plan ahead to address certain components on alternating weeks.
Each week, Jake will work with the student to evaluate progress and success. Together, they will discuss important topics addressed in each lesson, and ways in which the student can improve for the following lesson. He also will help students make practice plans and strategies, and will provide assignment sheets to aid students during their weekly practice sessions. Students will be encouraged to perform when able and to audition for local competitions such as All-State, All-District, and Solo/Ensemble Contests.
60-, 45-, and 30-minutes are available. Lesson duration will be determined by the teacher, parent and student based on age, ability, commitment, and trajectory.
